[00:00:58] Now sit back and enjoy this episode of So Much More. Mall of America. It's home to world-class shopping, great dining, and amazing attractions and events. And these are our stories. Presented by Bloomington, Minnesota Travel and Tourism. Welcome to So Much More. We're glad you joined us. I am your host, Daniel Jasper, joined by my colleague, my friend, my co-host, Jill Renslow. Jill, how are you? I am fantastic, Dan. We kind of swap seats sometimes. Today, I'm in this one. I know it.

[00:01:28] I love this. I got to be your color commentary. I love it. Good. And we are going to talk to an old friend that's somebody that both of us have known for a long, long time and excited about it. We finally got him on the podcast. We're so excited. I know. We've been trying for months. This is awesome. We are going to talk about Merlin Entertainments. And many people may not know that name today, but they are the operators of Sea Life, Minnesota, here at Mall of America, along with many other attractions worldwide.

[00:01:56] But today, our guest is John Sowell. John is the Senior Communications Manager for Sea Life and Merlin Entertainments in about 20 other locations, I hear. John, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me. I think I've known you since I had hair. So I appreciate it. It's been a long time. It's been a great journey. Wow. I still didn't have hair when I first met John. I have one up on both of you, so we're good to go. Yes, exactly. And actually, we first got to know you. You were an intern at Sea Life, correct? Yes.

[00:02:25] I was an intern at Sea Life, which is super fun. I was a marketing intern my junior year of college. I went to St. Cloud State, just up north a little bit. Go Huskies. Go Huskies. And that was just so much fun. And they asked me to come back after I graduated. And I've been there for 20 years. And kind of tell us briefly how that career progression, what different positions you've held along the way. Yes. I was in the marketing department for a long time. And then I moved to PR when Merlin Entertainment's expanded and added more attractions.

[00:02:51] So that's where I got more attractions to help with, whether it be Legoland or Sea Life's across the country. And now I'm the senior communications manager supporting still sites like Sea Life at Mall of America. That's fantastic. The, I first got to know John when he was new to his career and we were, I was doing public relations for the mall at the time. And so we'd work on promoting different activities at Sea Life. It was, it was so much fun. I think pretty much everyone in Minnesota has been to Sea Life here at Mall of America. I sure hope they have been. If they haven't, they should be.

[00:03:21] They're missing out, right? It is one of our best attractions. It really is. But for those who haven't, or those who may be in another state, describe what Sea Life is like here. Kind of walk us through and paint a picture for us. Yeah. So Sea Life at Mall of America is amazing. It's Minnesota's largest aquarium, which a lot of people don't realize. And one of the coolest parts of Sea Life is the 300 foot long underwater tunnel. It's as long as the football field. Football season's about to start. So just imagine Justin Jefferson running for an amazing touchdown.

[00:03:50] Well, he'll be running through amazing different exhibits as well. We have four different exhibits in the underwater tunnel. Two are freshwater. And one has local fish, like you'll see the Mississippi River or Minnesota Lakes. We have the Amazon. We have Shark Cove, which I'm sure you remember. We have giant sharks, sawfish. We have rescue sea turtles in there as well. And then we have Rainbow Reef, which you can explore in different ways, as we'll talk about in a little bit too. But plus we have seahorses, jellyfish, and you can even touch real sea creatures too.

[00:04:18] My kids love that part where they can get hands-on with the animals. It's fun for people of all ages, but there's a really educational aspect as well to Sea Life, right? You can learn about nature and how to protect it. Exactly. It's like fun, entertainment. But yes, it's not going to school, but we have so much fun with our guests teaching them about our love for the ocean and sharing that with them. So you can get an activity trail as you go through, and you can stamp different facts as you go through the attraction, which is super fun.

[00:04:46] Plus, which I really love, we have talks and feedings throughout the day. So have you ever seen a shark eat? Probably not. Even if you've been to the aquarium before, maybe you hadn't seen it yet. So you can actually watch our sharks eat. You can learn about them. You can learn about our rescued sea turtles. It's a really, really fun way to learn. And that's what I love about sea life is it really is a different experience every time you go. And you can enjoy it at every age. You have parents that bring strollers for the little kids that just want to see the fish and they are entertained that way.

[00:05:14] But no matter what age you are, you walk in with that sense of discovery and you walk out with a great appreciation for the education behind what you guys do every single day. And you really forget that you're inside a mall when you go into sea life. And I just, every time I go, I love it because you always discover something new. I do too. And for those guests who have never seen our sea life, Jill, where in the mall is it located? How do you find it? It is located on the east side. You actually enter on level one and then you go down to the sub level.

[00:05:44] So it's a great, convenient location, whether you're taking light rail over, if you park in the east parking ramp right there. And it's really close to our rotunda where we host a lot of different events. And it's conveniently located for everybody to find. It's really easy. And I'm curious because now I know your kids and they're in college now, but you brought them here when they were little too. Do you happen to remember how they responded to sea life maybe the first couple of times you took them? I would say my most memorable moment was them looking for Nemo because you guys have the clownfish in the Caribbean.

[00:06:13] You can definitely find Nemo. Yes, Nemo. And that was always fun. The kids loved that part of it, but definitely walking through the tunnel was the highlight for the kids. Yeah. How about you have little kids too, John? It's amazing. And what about the first time you take them to, first of all, do they really know where you work and what it's all about? And what do they think of it? They definitely know where I work. One time I brought my son in and we were having a mermaid event and that was really fun because he was like, dad, you work with mermaids too? I was like, yeah, yeah.

[00:06:44] So it's really fun. I remember taking them in a stroller and the strollers are awesome these days because they have the kids looking up. So in the tunnel, the kids get the best view because they're just looking up the whole time. It's amazing fish, but it's so much fun to come to Mall of America and come to sea life. And I've been there for so long that I was there, you know, when I didn't have a family and now I do, so it's fun to like live it through them too. And I get to tell them all my dad jokes as I go through the aquarium as well, which is super fun. I want to hear a couple dad jokes. Oh man. Okay.

[00:07:13] Well, the seahorses, I don't know if you knew this, but the males actually hold the babies. So I'm glad I'm not a seahorse because they can hold up to a hundred babies at a time. Okay. I did know that. I did a report on seahorses in school and I learned that early on. Yeah. It was fascinating. There goes one of my questions. There goes one of your trivia questions. We're going to get that right later, John. I think you're both going to rock it. We're set to go. But you should take a lot of pride in the success that sea life here at Mall of America

[00:07:38] has accomplished because talk a little bit about how it lands within the portfolio for Merlin, knowing that the performance is really recognized across your company. Yeah. Of course, we have many attractions for Merlin entertainments around the world, but sea life at Mall of America is one of the flagship attractions for sure. So many visitors to Mall of America every year and sea life is just so impressive. We mentioned the 300 foot long tunnel and we see so many guests and it's just so awesome to share that love with thousands of guests every single day and every year.

[00:08:09] So it's just an amazing experience and Merlin really appreciates having an attraction here at Mall of America. And we love talking about sea life and the entertainment and the value you bring to families. We have a lot of attractions here at Mall of America. Sometimes it's hard to decide what to do. One of the big ones is Nickelodeon Universe, of course, but we do bundle packages too, right, Jill? We do. You can do a lot of different things. That's why I had to be careful when I was like one of our best attractions because Nickelodeon

[00:08:36] is such a cornerstone for what we offer here, but we do have the packages and packaging sea life and Nickelodeon is the number one bundle that we have, but we really want to make sure families when they come to Mall of America that they can really stay and enjoy all the attractions and to be able to have some of those A-level attractions that you could literally spend half a day or longer in. I want to make sure people are going to enjoy that multi-day experience here. Yep. And get value for it too, which is amazing. You mentioned mermaids.

[00:09:04] I know you've done a bunch of crazy things at sea life, fun things, right? Energetic, creative things. Talk about some of the other things that you and your team have come up with and share that with our listeners and how you come up with those ideas. Well, I'm pretty creative. So some of that stems from me. Yep. So I bring this to our Aquarius team. We think of ways that guests will really have fun with it. And also just a different way to engage our animals as well for enrichment.

[00:09:31] So just recently we had our stingrays predict the Vikings season record. I missed that. I missed it too. Yeah. They think they're going to do really good this year. So they think they're going to do 10 and 7. So we have an experience where we can actually feed the stingrays. So we did that with our Aquarius in the morning and it was super fun. We had the Vikings and Packers on each side or every single game. And that was really fun. But we also do, falls coming up, we do underwater pumpkin carving, which is super fun.

[00:10:00] Our Aquarius and our divers dress up when they go underwater, which is really fun to see. And then they actually carve a pumpkin underwater. We probably all carved a pumpkin with our family on dry land. Imagine doing it underwater. Yeah. How does that work? I'm very curious. And where do the guts go? Yeah. Well, they scoop out the guts before. Oh, okay. So that's good. Okay. And then sometimes they'll like make a trace or something, but then they'll legit carve it sometimes better than what I could do, like if I really tried all underwater. And then they'll leave it under there. Sometimes they'll put a light in it, which is really cool. So light up.

[00:10:31] And then oftentimes the turtles will come by and check it out or take a little nibble. So do the animals eat it? They'll take a little bite of it. They'll, they'll like explore, maybe go even go in it, um, the carving, but it's really unique and just a fun way to give our animals some enrichment, something different to look at, but also our guests love it. And you do that right before Halloween or kind of what's the timeframe? Yeah, we do it various times in October. So check our website. We'll have those, um, up and we also do things like scuba claws as well. A lot of kids, you know, we tell them, you know, Santa's everywhere.

[00:11:00] Well, when they come to see life, they're shocked to see that he's also underwater. So they're on very good behavior. Okay. Uh, Santa scuba diving. I, I, it's interesting. I like it. Um, talk more about scuba and what happens. You were excited about talking about scuba in the, in the aquarium earlier. Yeah. Yeah. Well, um, you can see like Santa, we, we do scuba bunny sometimes too. So we have our divers dress up and go in the water just to give our guests a fun experience.

[00:11:29] And we sometimes even bring up a pad down so we can interact with the guests, ask them questions, like thumbs up, thumb down questions as well. So John, if I guess like myself, like if I wanted to go scuba diving, can I pay a premium and actually sign up and either get certified or go underwater with the sea creatures? Well, we, we used to have that program, but now we've switched to snorkeling cause it's more inclusive. Okay. Um, so now we offer snorkeling again, which is super exciting in our rainbow reef.

[00:11:55] So tropical fish from around the world, including a zebra shark named Marty, which is awesome. Super friendly. Okay. We have a rescued sea turtle in there, in there as well called Seymour. Seymour has bubble butt, um, got hit by a boat when they were younger and got air in between their shell and their skin. So their butt floats in the water. You learn all these things when you do the snorkeling, but you can actually not only see the fish, but you can get in the water. Yeah. I think our social team just got a chance to experience this snorkeling. Talk about that a little bit.

[00:12:24] Well, I, the team was super excited and they were going through the office, just ecstatic about, yes, about being able to do this and they were creating the content to help promote it. And I was like, that is such a cool experience. And so that I would assume people can just find stuff out on your website about how to register for that. Yeah. Yeah. It's 125 bucks. So way cheaper than a flight to like Hawaii, for example. And if they forgot their swimsuit, well, you're in the right place. You can definitely get a swimsuit here and, uh, you can. In the mall. In the mall. You're talking. Yes.

[00:12:52] We don't sell swimsuits at the aquarium at the moment, but yes, in the mall. And we'll provide the wetsuit, the flippers. We'll do a little training. You get to go behind the scenes tour as well. So you get to know a lot about the fish that you're about to see and you can actually snorkel. We've had people and I'm not joking, snorkel in Hawaii and then come to our snorkel and they like ours better because you're guaranteed to see fish. You're guaranteed to see all these amazing creatures and it's right in your backyard. If you live in Minnesota, it's amazing. It's really easy. You talk about behind the scenes tours.

[00:13:21] Talk a little bit about that. What guests see when they do one at Sea Life and what that experience is. Yeah, definitely. You've probably been on a couple of my behind the scenes tours as well. So yeah, a behind the scenes tour is an added cost, but it's a great deal. You can see our laboratory where we care for the creatures. You can see our kitchen where we prep food for our creatures. It's almost like having a restaurant, but for fish. And we also have our up on deck area.

[00:13:49] So you can become inches within our sand tiger sharks, our sawfish. So when you're in the tunnel, if you look up, that's where you'll be. You'll be above the exhibits. It's amazing. A must do for sure. It's an amazing experience. Have you ever done the behind the scenes at Sea Life, Jill? I have not. It's actually really fun because just the vantage point of looking down into the water gives you a completely different perspective on how large the animals are and how many of them are because you really see them. It's a fun experience.

[00:14:18] I would just say it was probably an unofficial behind the scenes because we've been in the tunnel multiple times for photo shoots. We usually have to do those before or after hours if we're doing commercial or photography, whatever that might be. So we got a chance to get sneak peeks of those different angles and what's kind of behind the scenes, which is very cool. It's very fun. I love doing that. The holidays are coming up, right? Yes. So what do you guys have coming for the holidays?

[00:14:44] Is anything special, anything you can tease us about or get people excited about? So I talked about Scuba Claus, so he'll be returning for sure. But we have a friend with Scuba Claus this year. For the first time ever, we're going to be having an event around Elf on the Shelf at Sea Life Aquarium. So it's not just at Sea Life in Mall of America. It's across the nation at all the Sea Lifes, but we're super excited. We know and I know personally that you guys do an amazing job during the holidays. My family is always here on Black Friday for sure by 7 a.m.

[00:15:12] And that's so much fun. But we're excited for anyone who loves the holidays or has an Elf on the Shelf tradition to come to Sea Life at Mall of America and check it out. Another reason to visit. Is that something that you ever did with your kids, Elf on a Shelf? We did not. You did not? I feel like it became popular right after my kids were out of kind of that grade school time frame, which I'm kind of thankful for. I'm kind of glad I missed it a little bit, right? One thing that I didn't have to worry about. I see social media and stuff of people like with flour all over their kitchen and stuff. It can get missed.

[00:15:42] Yes, but very fun that you guys are bringing it. It's a fun tradition and families will love it. Is your Elf going to be mischievous? Any idea? We're going to have mischievous elves. They're going to be doing lots of different things. Okay. And you'll have to spot them. Cute. When you come out. Thank you. It's going to be really fun. You know, one thing that Merlin Entertainments does is they have attractions all over the world, right? And as Jill mentioned, and you confirmed this is one of the premier ones, but you're going to be opening a new one here at Mall of America as well. Wondering if you can talk a little bit about that.

[00:16:12] Yeah. So Merlin Entertainments works with different brands. We have like Legoland Parks and things like that. So we're working with Fever Entertainment and Exhibition Hub to bring Bubble Planet here to Mall of America, the first time ever in Minnesota. It's been kind of across the nation and it's super popular, but we're really excited to bring that here at Mall of America. It's going to be the West Side Level 3 in a really big space, and we are thrilled to bring that experience here later this year. Have you experienced it at another location or personally? Yes, I have. Yeah, I went to Dallas.

[00:16:41] We have a couple attractions there, including Peppa Pig Theme Park and another Sea Life. So I got to check it out just myself. So it's super fun just myself to experience it, but I cannot wait to bring my family there. There's a giant bubble bath ball pit that you can head into. It's the most fun you'll ever have in a ball pit of your lives. We've probably all been in ball pits, I'm assuming, but this one takes it up a notch for sure. And if you love bubbles, which who doesn't, you're going to have a blast. And what other, I looked on the website a little bit and saw some of the different rooms and stuff.

[00:17:10] Have you explored it at all? Are you excited about this? I am really excited about it. I think it's going to be a great complement to our attraction mix here at the mall. And I'm also curious, looking at the websites, I haven't had a chance to visit it in person because our sister property in American Dream in New Jersey had it. And curious about what is the most popular room? Because it looks like there's a lot of different areas within the attraction. Is there a popular room that everybody loves to go to? I mean, there's so many things, honestly. So the bubble bath ball pit is phenomenal. But there's also a bubble dome with projections,

[00:17:40] both outside and inside, which is really cool. And if you like the traditional bubbles, if you're a traditionalist with bubbles, we have a soap bubble room where when you walk in, bubbles will surround you. It's really cool. And there's even a bubble ocean, so kind of a sea life tie in, weirdly enough, where there's all these balloons around and you can like swim through an ocean of balloons. And it's just going to be a blast. It's like a 60 to 90 minute experience too. So it's definitely worth your time. And it's going to be a fun experience for really all ages,

[00:18:10] whether you're one or 101. Okay. You're going to enjoy it. And when is that opening here at Mall of America again? That's opening later this year. Later this year. For the holidays. So that'll be a perfect gift for the holidays. Absolutely. We love the gift of experience here. We do, right? And there's so many to do here. So you can come do Nickelodeon, have a nice lunch, a nice dinner, something like that. Go see Scuba Claws and Elf on the Shelf and do Bubble Planet all at the same time. Yes. I'm curious. I want to hear about some of the funnest,

[00:18:37] most memorable times you've had at Sea Life. Can you share some stories about things that you'd love to share with our audience? Definitely. I have a couple with Sea Life. And if you don't mind, I did used to work at Camp Snoopy. Yes. Now in Nickelodeon Universe. I have to share a story from that too. But we talked about snorkeling. So many years ago, we had a grandma who always did Christmas cards for her family. And she always liked to do super unique Christmas cards. And she didn't want to travel for this one. She wanted to do something local. She didn't tell any of her family about this.

[00:19:07] And she actually snorkeled in the aquarium and got a picture with her and sharks and sent that to her whole family. Little did she know, we also invited media out. So it was in the Star Tribune. So maybe they gave it away a little bit. But that was so fun. She was so vibrant, so awesome. She was in her 70s and just had a blast. And then we also had another snorkel one, which is pretty cool. But we had a military member who was back on deployment, just came back. And we worked with the military to do a surprise unveil for him and his family. So he was snorkeling and had a sign that said,

[00:19:37] hi, I'm home to his family. And the coolest part was before he left, he found out that his wife was pregnant. And he had not met his child yet. So he got to meet one of his kids for the first time. Oh, that's fabulous. It was so awesome. That's amazing. How did you get the family there? Like, how did they time that up? We worked with the group that we were working with from the military and they brought a limo. And also he had other kids too at the time. So we were just going to give them a VIP, you know, sea life experience.

[00:20:06] And they were like, oh, look, there's a snorkeler there. It was really special. What a great surprise. Yeah. I also happen to know that there's been at least two weddings in sea life. You want to talk about those at all? We might've been involved in helping put that together. Yes, we've had underwater weddings at sea life. So one was before my time, but that was filmed on the Today Show. It was live on the Today Show, yeah. Yes. And then we've had others since then. What we've learned through having weddings at sea life, which you don't think you would learn as a person,

[00:20:35] is to wait down the veil on the dress because everything floats. Oh, sure. So we would add certain weights to the dress, which is really fun. And we've done underwater communications so they can hear, like the family and friends can hear it as well. And we've had, you know, guests like sharks and sea turtles make their appearances at the wedding as well. So you talk about all the different creatures that are in the aquarium. Is there like one that has just is a character that has a big personality

[00:21:03] that you guys, you know, connect with or, you know, the folks that are feeding them or whatever else? Is there a big personality in the tank? Definitely. I really like Emilio. Emilio came to us in a cool-up container and now Emilio is over 300 pounds. Wow. And it's a rescue loggerhead sea turtle. A sea turtle. And Emilio is so curious about anything and everything. So when you walk by or if there's feeding, even if they're supposed to be feeding the sharks, Emilio is always coming by, checking things out. And it's just like almost feels like

[00:21:32] they're stopping for selfies while you're going through the aquarium. Do you remember when we had our offices in the basement? I do. I don't remember what year that was, but you had a sea turtle that you needed to get some vitamin D and you had to bring it on a large car, like outside and literally get it in the sun. So it could, I think it was something for the shell of the turtle. But I remember being down there and like daily, the turtle was going out to get its sunshine. Yes. And we've since added different lights to like give it that vitamin D too. But yeah, we do so many fun things with these creatures.

[00:22:02] We even do something that maybe you did as a parent is slip some vitamins in some of their food. So we sneak some different things in for sharks and stuff too, which is just really unique. You guys take very good care of all the animals down there. Which makes us proud, right? You really do. I actually remember, I had forgotten about that turtle, but I do remember it when you bring it up. But I also remember when Seymour arrived and you first got Seymour with the bubble butt, right? Because that was a story and it was really awesome how you guys were able

[00:22:31] to help care for that turtle and he's thriving, correct? Thriving. And we don't even really like have these sea turtles. We kind of have them on loan from U.S. Fish and Wildlife because there's so many sea turtles that get injured or hurt and they need a good home and we give them a really amazing home here at Sea Life. For guests that want to learn more about just sea life in general, getting tickets, going snorkeling, getting a behind the scenes tour, what's the best way to check you out? Yeah, they can just Google us, Sea Life at Mall of America or go to visitsealife.com

[00:23:01] and they can find us and check out all of our different things like behind the scenes tour, snorkeling, so many fun things. And I think we need to go snorkeling. I would love it. And I think we need to tape a podcast snorkeling. Let's do it. And we need to get Ryan and Ryan underwater snorkeling with us. Would that be good? Sign me up. I'm ready. We're going to finish really quickly with a little quiz that I have called Fact or Fishy. So you have to say either that it's a fact or it's a fishy. Okay, this is not fair.

[00:23:30] He knows all of this. And you're going first on every one. Great. So first of all, an octopus has three hearts. Ooh, I'll say fact. Fact. And that is a fact. An octopus actually does have three hearts. Most sharks can swim backwards. Fishy. Say fishy. Dang it, it is fishy. Most sharks can't, but a small percentage can. Right? It's the way their tails are.

[00:23:58] Jellyfish have been around longer than dinosaurs. Ooh, I'll say fact. Fact? Wow, you guys are just way too good at this. I got to do a better job here. A group of flamingos is called? Uh, I don't know. I'm not going to give you the word because you need to guess it. I don't know. I was just at the zoo and this is mentioned. Yes. And now I'm testing you. Flock? I think it's flock. Flock. Yeah. Is it? No, probably not. It's a flamboyance.

[00:24:28] Oh, flamboyance. A flamboyance. Okay, good. That wasn't really how I was supposed to do that one. We don't have flamingos at Sea Life. I'm taking a win for that. I know why they turn pink. You know why they turn pink? I do know why. Why do they turn pink? Brine shrimp. Yeah, they eat shrimp. The shrimp they eat. I knew that. We grow brine shrimp at Sea Life. See? So there's a connection there, right? With the flamboyance of flamingos. When were there flamingos in Sea Life? Yes. Sea turtles can breathe underwater indefinitely. I'll say fact. Fishy.

[00:24:58] It is fishy. They need a surface to breathe. I had to throw one off so they could win. Thank you for doing that. So it's not going to end up a tie. Another, starfish has five brains. Actually, one in each of its ends. Fishy. Fishy. Dang it. Yes, it is fishy. Fishy. They don't have any brains, by the way. Correct. You know, they eat and get rid of their food in the same spot. Oh, that's interesting. Yes. Fact. Yes. It is a fact. I'm going fact for that one, too.

[00:25:25] And then finally, some fish can change from one sex to another during their lifetime. Fact. Fact. That is a fact. Do you know what that's called? I don't. No. I was going to look it up and I forgot to. But it's something really cool. That's what I'm going to say. Sure. So, John, you win. You had all of them correct. Jill, you did really well. Thank you. That was fantastic. John, thank you so much for coming on the show, joining us today. You've been a longtime friend, partner.
