And these are our stories. Presented by Bloomington, Minnesota Travel and Tourism. Hey, Mall of America fans. Welcome to So Much More. I'm Jill Renslow, your host for today's show. And I have my two favorite Sarahs with me. Sarah Johnson, who's our marketing director, and Sarah Rogers, who's our trend expert. And they are going to join me for one of my favorite topics for the fall,

[00:01:29] fashion. There's so many fun things in store. This is the time of year where you get to pull out the sweaters, put on the layers, find out your cute boots again. And we're going to find out all those things that you want to take a look at to add to your wardrobe for this fall because obviously we have a lot of stores that you can shop at and check it all out here at the mall. So ladies, welcome to So Much More. Thank you. We're going to do SJ and Sarah so we don't get confused. Okay, perfect. Everybody knows you as SJ, so we're good. Sounds like a plan. But I would love to just start kind of big. What is the mood for this fall? We love it here in Minnesota

[00:01:58] because the weather starts changing, the leaves are changing colors, just all the things and it just gets you in the mood to put on some layers. So what's that feeling? Cozy chic. Cozy chic. So explain what that means.

[00:02:10] Well, you'll want the layers, you know, just the fabrics that feel great next to the skin, layering up, you know, just because we are finding it's a little warmer, it's a little cooler depending on the time of the day. But the elements like the funnel necks, you know, are great. The boots, you know, the jackets. I mean, if you love jackets, this is your season. You are going to love what we have in store.

[00:02:36] I love that. And it's funny because fall in Minnesota especially, it can be 70 and sunny one day and 45 and chilly and windy one day. So really, we are the state where you can have a lot of different jackets, especially because you just need one for all the different levels of temperature. You do? Yes. SJ, what's your favorite jacket in your closet? Oh my gosh, y'all. I was just going to say, I probably have at least 15 jackets. You guys, I'm embarrassed. But to your point, every day is different.

[00:03:01] I just bought a really beautiful suede jacket from Topshop and it's beautiful. It's like a, what's, it's not yellow. What is that term? Like a mustard? Yes, like a mustard and it's a trench coat. Okay. It is beautiful with like a cinched belt. I'm so, so excited about it, but I just recently bought it for family photos. Yes. So I'm now using it. I wanted it for that format. That color's going to pop. Yes. Very, very fun with boots and denim. I'm so excited about it.

[00:03:30] Well, and what's great about so many jackets is they are part of your outfit. You wear them indoors and outdoors because they just become that layer, but it looks great too, especially with the fun colors. Yes. And I have to say Topshop can be found at Nordstrom. So if anybody's wondering. Yes. And I love that they have them. I love that. Okay. Let's talk specifically when you're looking at overarching trends, talk about colors, talk about patterns, talk about textures. Mm-hmm. What are we seeing?

[00:03:53] For suede is the texture you want to have this season for sure. Colors look for a lot to choose from actually for the girls that love black like me. We certainly have that, but the camels, the browns, the browns are saying so strong. So you'll definitely have that burgundy pops of red. You'll see that in that beautiful bag in front of me. So you've got lots of choices with colors.

[00:04:19] And what was the other one? So we want the luxury patterns. Rugby stripes. So stripes are big and also plaids. Okay. I'm feeling really good right now. I've got chocolate brown and stripes. I didn't even mean to. Just nailing it. You start getting into the colors. Yes. And animal prints. Yes. And wearing my boots today. Which has become, I feel like, a neutral. I was going to say. I feel like it's a mainstay. It's been around for so long and you can mix and match it with so many things. Yes.

[00:04:46] I love animal print. We've got a great pair of animal print shoes that we found at the Primark store, which we're real excited to have. Real budget friendly and you can get the look, ladies. So we love that. Yeah. So let's talk about what's on the table. So Primark, which we love our brand new store because what's the price point on those shoes? They're very affordable. Under $30, I believe. Maybe $28, $35. Somewhere in that range. Really great price. $25. Yes. $25. What a steal.

[00:05:16] Isn't that great? And that animal print. Think how that can really elevate your wardrobe. You can wear them with jeans. You can wear them with a dress. Take something you already have in your wardrobe and update it just a little bit. You don't have to break the bank. You feel good. You look good. And slingbacks are an important trend. And they do look good underpants too. Okay. So question about slingbacks in the fall. Some of us wear, whether it's like a tight or something underneath, like how does that work with a slingback? Is that fine?

[00:05:44] You can wear a tight with your slingback. Okay. Absolutely. Okay. Absolutely. So don't hesitate to do that. It'll just depend on the overall look, the color that you choose. But I think it'll look just fine. Okay. So slide over to those boots. I've got my eye on those. Jill's taking those home. Those are from Zara. I'm like, and what size are those? I know. Those are from Zara. And the pointy toe, the kitten heel. Ladies, it's all out there for us this season. I mean, get excited about it because it can really shake up your wardrobe.

[00:06:14] So the knee high, the mid length, the ankle length. I mean, the round toes. So if you're like, the cowboy boots are new or store the area. Yes. Oh my gosh. Yes. It's beautiful.

[00:06:45] So I think that's a win-win.

[00:07:07] Absolutely. Well, what I love, if you're talking about all the different heights are good this season, you can then pull out the ones from last season too. You don't have to completely redo your shoe wardrobe. You don't. Because I felt like for a couple of years, it was like, okay, this height works. Now it's this height. It's dramatic. And so you just kept getting rid of things or changing things out. It sounds like everything goes this year.

[00:07:26] It really does because you want to work with what you're wearing. So, you know, a wide leg pant, you might want that pointy or toe. If you're wearing a skinny or a cigarette leg, they're calling it too, you might feel like the round toe is great. So the mid-heel height, you just have all the options. Whatever you feel really pulls your look together, makes you feel good and confident, run it.

[00:07:52] That's great. So back to the boots. I love suede, but suede in Minnesota is tough sometimes. So what is your advice? Spray them and protect them would be a suggestion. And there is faux suede out there as well, which is a fabric, just like there's faux leather out there, which I love faux leather. So I look at it. I love suede. It's so luxurious and it looks so rich and it can really add that texture to an outfit that just elevates it.

[00:08:21] But if we just had a snowstorm and salt is down, I'm not wearing my suede boots. That's when you want to have something that is easy to clean up, but do protect them. That will help because, you know, you can just put that little protection on there and hopefully clean them up so that they look good. So get a pair of weather boots too. There you go. There you go. Well, SJ and I were eyeing these Adidas because they are so cute.

[00:08:49] And we have a new Adidas store here at the mall right outside Nordstrom Level 2. It is a beautiful store. They're a new concept design. Talk to us about these gorgeous purple sparkly mambas. They're so cute. The sambas, as you probably are aware of, have been going so strong. Really a popular silhouette. And we love that. You know, we have the Adidas store here at Mall of America now.

[00:09:13] These are the bedazzled pair. And they come in other colors as well. So you can get the color to maybe celebrate your team or your school. Like these are the colors of University of Minnesota. So you could certainly go that route. Or you can get just the classic ones. But they do look good with the wide leg and the ankle length and the barrel length jeans, style jeans.

[00:09:40] So fun to have a shoe that makes a statement and it's comfortable for two and a row. I was going to say, comfort is important. I live in my sneakers. Yes. I live in my sneakers. That is fantastic. Okay, let's just keep making our way around looking at handbags. What's the style for the season? Well, you know, especially for going out in the evening, it's nice to have a little shoulder bag. You know, if you're going out to dinner or anything, you don't have that big old tote that you're carrying around. So I'm seeing a lot of shoulder bags. This one's from Zara.

[00:10:09] I love the asymmetrical shape. You're going to see a lot of asymmetrical, even in tops. Skirt hem lines as well. So just fun. And then the pop of color, the red is good. But in general, look for really cute handbags that are in brown, in suede, with buckle detail. Totes are still popular, so don't worry about that. But shoulder bags are very popular because they take you from day to evening. Yeah. And which one? Where is this from? Zara. This one's Zara.

[00:10:38] I've seen a lot of Kate Spade, Coach. I mean, of course, Nortrim, you know, has a variety of packs, but it's Macy's, but it's beautiful. Isn't it pretty? They are really stunning. Yes. And the size is decent. Like, some of them get so small that it's hard to get all your things out. I give it the phone chest. To go from that day to night. Yeah. I give it the phone chest. It needs to be able to fit my phone in there and keys, you know, if you drive. And then I know it can make it from day to evening for me.

[00:11:06] And then I carry a tote with me if I'm going to be tooling around shopping rather than taking a bag. You know, I just put things in my tote. And then I can have a smaller bag to manage if I, you know, don't want to have to always dig in that tote to try to find my wallet. Yeah. And I think handbags like this, it's a nice pop of color, adds a little flair to your outfit because if you are wearing a black outfit or monochromatic of any sort, like, it's just... And I love the leopard print with the red, too. Yeah, me too.

[00:11:37] Those are always great. I think that's always going to be kind of classic to put those colors together. But red works so beautifully with gray and with a pop of red like that, even with olive green. So there's so many ways that you can incorporate it into your wardrobe and just kind of energize it, you know. And you're wearing just a basic turtleneck and jeans. And you've got a cute little bag, you know, that's a fun color, makes you feel good.

[00:12:03] And your girlfriends are going to want to know where you found it, too, because it's kind of a little sassy with that asymmetrical detail. Okay, let's shift over to denim. Denim's always a big thing. Are we going wide leg? Are we going... You said skinny leg or cigarette leg. Like, what... Is it all everything this season as well? The world is your oyster. We love this. You can do it all. So... And you may want to do it all. It all looks so good.

[00:12:26] The wide leg, the cuffed, the cigarette leg, the barrel leg, low rise, high rise, and mid rise. So SJ and I were talking a little bit before we all got together. And, you know, she said, low rise? I'm not so sure about that. And I said, you know, from a stylist standpoint, I'm glad it's back because it works well for ladies that have a short torso. Okay. Yeah.

[00:12:54] The high rise works great if you have a long torso or average torso. So I love that it really seems like we're celebrating everybody. Everybody gets to play. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And with the stores that we have right now, I'm seeing it at Primark. You know, very affordable jeans. You can get that barrel leg if you want. You can get that low rise if you like. It's all out there. Okay. What about the wash? Are we seeing darker washes, lighter washes?

[00:13:23] Or again, are we checking all the boxes? Dark and mid rise are really popular as we're moving into fall. Okay. I'm seeing that. But that light wash is still out there. Not as much distressed as, you know, I've seen over the summer. But that cuff, the dark, the little detailing, stitching pockets on the back, low personality in the jeans. You're seeing a little bit of that too. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:13:49] You know, with the stud detail, you know, on them, you know, just a little embellishment to elevate your game. And think about it. Denim is the backbone of most great casual wardrobes. So it's worth it to get a pair of jeans that look good on you, fit your style, and then just wear different tops with it. Your different sweaters or turtlenecks or blouses or throw a jacket on and take that tee that you were wearing this summer, you know, and just that makes it a little warmer.

[00:14:19] You know, as we're moving into temperatures that are fluctuating. It's interesting. I was just going to add on like a Levi's to your point on embellishments. A lot of brands now are offering an additional touch point to change out the buttons for a different color button like Levi's is doing that right now at Mall of America. And then you can also do a patch. Patches are also really big and trendy too, whether you want it on your denim jacket or your jeans. It feels like as we talk about in Anything Goes, it's interesting to see how brands are integrating that in to give people that opportunity to customize. To customize. Yeah.

[00:14:46] I'm glad you mentioned that because it reminded me that the Adidas store has a little, you know, pop-up section within the store where they will customize their gear for you. And they have a local spin on some of it too. So it can be, you know, team oriented or, you know, throwback. And so they've got fun little patches and decals, if you will, that they can hook you up with.

[00:15:13] And they were telling me it takes like 30 minutes or so to do that. So if you are wanting to customize something or add your own little personal flair, they've got an assortment for you to choose from. So sticking with accessories, are there other items? Belts, jewelry, scarfs were big this spring, summer. Is that going to continue into the fall? What other accessories can people look for? Neckerchiefs and scarves always. Zara has a great selection of scarves. I think, if I remember, Ever Eve does too.

[00:15:44] So definitely look for great accessories. Statement belts. Our new store, Ariat, they've got you covered, you know, with statement belts and accessories as well. Something about, what's her name? Lainey Wilson. Yes. She's got a cute little necklace or two that I was catching my eye. Something with like an eagle and layered already for you. So you definitely want to check out that store for great accessories, you know, like belts.

[00:16:10] SJ, you always have great earrings and hair accessories and things. Where are you finding your go-to places that you're going to update for the fall? I am a big accessory person. So as you were talking about statement belts, I have my big statement pink belt. It's one of my big earrings. I love Madewell. I feel like a lot of their statement pieces are really beautiful. Obviously Nordstrom or Macy's, you can find just a variety pack no matter what your interests are in. But I feel like new stores like a Primark or even H&M and Zara, I mean, there's really a full scale of like what your budget is.

[00:16:39] You can find, look for less. Or if you want to invest, there's plenty of beautiful pieces too. So that's where I would go up to that Nordstrom angle. But if I'm looking for something quick, H&M and Zara are fabulous too. My earrings are from Mango. Mango is a pretty good statement. Yes. And so very affordable. You know, I love shopping mangoes. We have the men's and the women's section. So they have great accessories. They do. Yeah. They've got the brooches.

[00:17:05] So we were talking about accessories, putting a brooch on, you know, a lapel or, you know, wherever you kind of really want to punctuate. You certainly have that option too. So have fun with accessories. And if you are on a budget and you are wanting to update, I think accessories are a great way to do it. You know, work with what you have, but just add that little new element. It can really change the vibe. Mm-hmm. So what's your advice for people as they turn to the fall weather?

[00:17:32] They're looking to stay on a budget, want to get a few things to add to their wardrobe. How do you recommend that people look at their wardrobes and how they prepare for the fall, knowing that they can use things that they already have? But maybe they have their favorite jeans, favorite T-shirt, like you said, jackets. But what is the best way to go about that? And also, how do you encourage them to check out some of these new stores that they might not have shopped at previously? Mm-hmm. I think the best way to go about it, I hope you love it like I do.

[00:18:01] I love playing in my closet and looking at what you have and make sure you still want to wear it. Mm-hmm. So pick out the things that you are excited about wearing and style your outfits. You know, if you've got the basic turtleneck, maybe you want to add a new belt. Maybe you want to add a new bag. If you are building your wardrobe on a color scheme, it'll make it much easier for you to keep working back to that. Mm-hmm. So think of your closet as if you're decorating a room in your house.

[00:18:28] Keep adding things that work with that story. You already have a sofa and a chair, if we're using that analogy. You don't need to go out and buy another sofa and chair. You want to get the pillows and the throw rugs and the accessories to go with it. So if you use that analogy, that's the way to build a wardrobe. And as far as checking out the stores, if you're on a budget, Primark is just a treasure trove, you know, with great prices. But I love H&M right now is killing the game too. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

[00:18:57] And so you just need to come and spend a little time shopping and just looking, but keep thinking about what you already have and you're working back to that. So you're just building a wardrobe. That's the smartest way to approach it and get the most mileage out of it and look terrific. And put it on repeat. If you love it, don't save it for a special occasion. Absolutely.

[00:19:23] And I think it's really good advice because I know I'm guilty of it where you just go shopping and you sometimes forget what you have at home. So making sure you familiarize yourself with those pieces, especially those seasonal transitional pieces. So you remember what you have in your closet and what you're maybe looking for specifically. And you obviously might be surprised and delighted as you're doing your window shopping and maybe, you know, treating yourself to something that was unexpected. But knowing what you already have and working with that is really important. Do that for your kids as well.

[00:19:51] You know, when you're shopping for them, keep getting them. You're teaching them to build a wardrobe is smart. If you feel like you get too cookie cutter, it's like everything looks the same. I want to shake it up. You know, for women, a dress is a great way to shake it up because it's one and done. You don't have to think about the top and the bottom. You already have it. You know, so I think get a great pair of shoes that, you know, kind of works with everything.

[00:20:16] You know, like a knee high boot works great with the wide leg because you can still tuck it under. And yet it looks good with a skirt and a dress. And moving forward, we're going to see a lot of skirts. You know, if what I've been seeing over the fashion weeks in New York and Milan and elsewhere, skirts are going to be a big deal. So you're going to want to have the shoes that kind of go with that. So what type of skirts are you seeing? Pencil, midi. That's okay. For sure. I like the longer skirts.

[00:20:47] I do too. So the midi will be there. I really feel like retailers and designers are really giving us options. So you get to purchase what celebrates you. And I feel like the Mall of America is giving you options on being able to shop at price points that work for you as well. But if fashion is a luxury, we recognize that. But it's fun.

[00:21:13] And if you're looking to put a little fun in your life with fashion, we've got you. So SJ, are you starting to see some deals out there? I know we all love a good bargain, a good discount. What are you seeing right now at the mall? Yeah. I think we're in an interesting time frame because we're obviously talking fall. But a lot of brands are already starting their holiday deals. Like people are starting to do those introductions, which is really great. I mean, as we were talking about economic impact right now, people are, you know, holding a little tighter to their purse strings. They want to make sure they're getting that bang for their buck.

[00:21:42] So a lot of deals are starting to enter the market or just loyalty. Use your rewards. Almost every brand at this point has a loyalty program. Highly recommend signing up for it and just exploring what that could look like. So it's almost the twofold. Check your favorite brands in the deals, but also sign up for those loyalty programs too. I agree with that. If you don't mind giving an email address or create one that you just give to retailers and, you know, be loyal to them and you'll hear about their promotions.

[00:22:12] There have been a lot of friends and family discounts. I've been taking advantage of that where you get an extra off at some of the brands that you don't always get that extra off. So that always helps as well if you've had an eye on something that, you know, you really like, but you'd like a little savings on it. Mm-hmm.

[00:22:29] So with influencers on social media impacting people's style and bringing things forward of trends, products, brands, what is your advice to shoppers, consumers about how to navigate that? Because obviously what might look good on one body type might not look good on another or as good or whatever that might be. What is your advice of how to take some of that influencer content and what they're seeing on social media and then helping them craft their shopping journey?

[00:22:58] I can go first if that's okay. Yeah, sure. I mean, I look at it as a multi-step and I'm speaking for myself as a consumer and what I typically do. I actually really love Pinterest as well. I mean, it's universal. You can see creators across every platform at this point. But I like to use it as inspiration so what it truly is. And then I actually go to look at the product itself. I have a multi-step journey to look at the websites. And then I come in store. I want to see the full scope because to your point, what you see online isn't what it actually maybe looks like, feels like, fits like.

[00:23:26] So really using the channels to be more of like the inspirational tools that they are. And then coming in store if that's accessible to you and being able to try it on, feel it, explore different options too because you're going to find different places. But creating a step-by-step process that works for you but really using creators as inspiration. That's great. I want to underscore that word inspiration because that would be what I would suggest. Use it as inspiration because you don't know their body shape.

[00:23:55] I mean, that's like seeing somebody in the high-rise jeans, you know, that may really look great on them and it's not your A-game. But recognize that, you know, the grass looks green over there. Yours is looking pretty good too. And especially if you honor thyself, you know, so if you're working back to your wardrobe and what you have, you want to look stylish is the game. It doesn't mean you have to follow every trend just because it's out there.

[00:24:23] You want to grab the ones that work for you and so have an eye for that. And so I look at fashion as art. It's wearable art. But it all doesn't get to come home with me. So I can admire it and respect it, but I use inspiration. Sometimes I see things that an influencer might be talking about and it triggers a memory of something that I have. And it might be the way that you decide to wear it the next time. You already have the pieces.

[00:24:53] It just triggered the memory for you on the style a little differently because that's really what we're all looking for. You have so much already, chances are. But how can I put a little twist on it? And sometimes ideals from other people, but I don't use it as a sources. I've got to have everything that they have because everything they have doesn't maybe necessarily work for me. But sometimes, you know, it's the right thing. You've got to acknowledge that.

[00:25:21] And what I love most about you, Sarah, is that you have always given the advice where if you feel good in it, you're going to look good in it because you're going to carry that confidence that you're going to show up. So I think that's always important. It's like whatever you see on the rack, if it feels good on and you feel good walking down the road, it's great. So we can't forget about our guys. What are the guys wearing this fall? I definitely want to give some hints to them. Well, guys are wearing the wider leg.

[00:25:47] I mean, a lot of the same trends that we're seeing for women, the prints, the checks and the plaids are really popular. The funnel necks is so big. Those high necks on jackets, sweatpants as well. Camouflage is big for women, men, you know. So I think guys are having just almost as much fun as we are. The sneakers, too. There's just a great assortment out there. That's great.

[00:26:17] Anything to add, SJ? I was just going to say to your point as you were describing the styles, I've been watching the Tiger Woods documentary and his fashion was so good. And what you're describing was from the 2000s. Like I love that we're kind of in this little circle back and it's very chic and stylish and beautiful. But I was just watching this documentary last night and I was like, oh my gosh, this is trending now. And he looked great. And it looked great. Fashion's all about cycles. It is. Okay, ladies, we got to do a little quick round of this or that before we wrap up because I always like to add a little fun thing.

[00:26:47] So just something quick. So for both of you, boots or sneakers? SJ. Boots. Sneakers. Okay. How about statement jewelry or delicate layers? Statement jewelry. Statement jewelry. A great jacket or a great bag? Jacket. Jacket. Okay. Classic neutrals or a pop of color? Neutrals right now are calling me. Okay. Pop of color. Okay. And one standard trend or a few subtle updates?

[00:27:19] One standard trend. Sorry, standout trend. Oh, standout trend. Standout trend or subtle updates? Subtle updates. I think I'm subtle updates as well. Okay.
